擂茶饭 (Lui Char Fan) aka Sian Char (Savoury Tea)

February 28, 2010

This is one of my favourite Hakka food amongst many others! The Hakkas usually have this dish at the 7th day of Chinese New Year, (the birthday for all human beings) and usually will have 7 different kind of vegetable to go with it. This is not the authentic version unfortunately!

Usually my mum will have the following vegetables for the dish:

  1. Leek (sliced thinly)
  2. Frehs tofu (cubed and fried)
  3. French beans (diced)
  4. Coriander (chopped)
  5. Dried radish (chopped finely)
  6. Potato shoot (树仔菜)
  7. Choy Sum (or Pak Choi)

Stir fry all the different vegetable separately with minced dried shrimps and garlic and set aside in different plates.

My mum has this special grinding bowl and wooden pestle made from guava tree to grind the soup ingredients. The savoury tea is made of Kuan Yin tea leaf  and peanut with a pinch salt. Once the mixture reached the consistency of thick paste, add hot boiling water to make the suop. I think the pestle add special fragrant to the tea mixture!

Gosh, I am hungry already just thinking of the authentic one cooked by my mum!
